Declaring a Major

When: The approved periods for changing majors are offered every semester and summer. See the Academic Calendar for current dates. In general, majors may be declared or changed before and after Priority Registration but not during this period.

Who: Any student can change majors during the designated approved periods but certain restrictions apply:

  • Any student with 60 or more earned credit hours may not declare Undergraduate Studies as their major.
  • Majors in Colleges of Business, Communications, Design, Engineering, Nursing and the major of Landscape Architecture (all "Selective") must first apply and then be accepted into the major prior to declaring (see details below).

Where: For Undergraduate Studies students, come to the front desk in 109 Miller Hall. All other students should go to the office of their current college to begin the major change process.

What: Bring your UK student ID with you. We must see this to release your records. Also, if you have been permitted into a selective major, bring your admission notice. Proof of acceptance must be presented in order to receive your records.

How: Follow the directions below depending on whether you are declaring a selective or a non-selective
major:

  • For Non-Selective Admission Colleges: AG, A&S, EDU, FA, HS, SW:
    • Come to the front desk in 109 Miller Hall and tell the receptionist that you would like to declare a major. You will be asked to show your UK ID, fill out an Exit Survey and then be given the paperwork to deliver to your new college. Once you have delivered the paperwork to the college you will be officially declared and assigned an advisor in that college.
  • For Selective Admission Colleges:

    1. College of Business & Economics
      • If you have less than 50 hrs and at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, you may apply for "pre-major" status.
      • If you have greater than 50 hours you must meet the minimum pre-major and cumulative GPA requirements.

See B&E's web site, for current GPA requirements.
How to apply - Visit this link to complete the application process: http://www.gatton.uky.edu/undergraduates/ADVPersonalForms&Applications.html
Now What? - If you are accepted to B&E, you will receive a notice of acceptance. Bring this notice to Miller Hall and tell the receptionist that you would like to declare a major. You will be asked to show your UK ID, fill out an Exit Survey and be given paperwork to deliver back to 235 Gatton B&E Building. Once you have delivered the paperwork to B&E you will sign up to meet with a B&E advisor. When you have completed this meeting your major will be declared.
