Groceries vs. Clothes and Accessories

When it comes to shopping I love a great deal, especially when it comes to clothes, shoes and accessories.  While I will mention some tips on shopping and other fun things, I’ll first talk about our everyday expenses like going to the grocery store.

Grocery shopping can be a major task for some and finding ways to make your monthly grocery budget go a little further is always a plus.  Here are just a few practical tips that take little effort.  I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but don’t go grocery shopping when you’re hungry.  I have been guilty of this, and then I leave the store with a hot and ready rotisserie chicken, and I find myself taking a tour of the frozen dessert section.  Low and behold chocolaty goodness finds its way in my cart.  Clipping coupons is always a way to save, but be careful on buying things that you won’t use, just because you have a coupon.  Shortcuts.com is a website that has many partner stores where you can register your loyalty card with them.  Once registered, you can add electronic coupons to your card, and when you purchase the product, it automatically gives you the discount when you provide your loyalty card at checkout.  Just make sure to use them before they expire.  One more thing to keep in mind…buying store brands can save you money, but not always.  If the name brand is on sale, it may be a better value than the store brand.  Make sure you are comparing apples to apples and check to ensure the quantity of the name and store brand is the same.   If you prefer the name brand over the store brand you may find it less expensive at a different store, so if you’re out at a mega store, that has almost everything under the sun, check their price.  You may find yourself some savings.

Now, for the shopping tips that I mentioned.  One of my favorite things is to find something super cute, on sale.  I almost never pay full price for something.  Typically, I head straight for the sales rack when I go into a store to see what I can find.  When shopping for work/professional clothing I have found that outlet stores in town are a great place to find good deals.  And, if you like consignment there is a really good one in Lexington with nice clothes at a reasonable price, and they have men’s clothing too.  Keep in mind you may not always need to buy an entire new outfit, try finding some accessories to add to your existing clothing.  Beady necklaces are always perfect.  Another idea is to buy a flower pin that’s a bright color and wear it with a neutral sweater or cardigan.  It’s almost guaranteed to get compliments.  Belts are also a fun way to add some pizzazz to an otherwise bland outfit, at little cost.  Check out the clearance area for accessories and jewelry of different department stores…I’m confident you’ll find some great buys.

Until next time, happy savings!
