I saw an interesting article about how starting a Savings Account for a child (in any amount) was of significant statistical benefit for that child going to college. The article, linked below, stated that they were more likely to enroll in college than someone without that early start on saving, and even more likely to complete their degree on time. The prevailing thought on why this was so was that it helped the prospective student develop a “college bound” philosophy. I’m not sure if that’s the only reason, for it may also be an indicator that a parent is helping pave the way for at least allowing for the option. Whatever the case, it shows that opening a Savings Account for your children or grandchildren not only gives them a future source of funds but also increases their potential for a successful college career.

Ways to Cut Driving Costs

We are all feeling the effects of increasing gasoline costs, so it’s a good time to review ways to keep driving costs to a minimum. I’m writing this even as I acknowledge that the minimum is way bigger than it used to be, especially for those of us remembering when fuel costs were based on $3 per barrel of crude.

First, super-fast acceleration decreases gas mileage, as does consistently driving faster than the speed limit. Both of these contribute to needing more fuel than necessary, which of course translates into higher overall fuel costs.

In addition to slowing down, combining errands and planning your trips around town, keeping tire pressure where it belongs and getting rid of unnecessary weight (all things that make sense) to increase fuel efficiency (thereby decreasing driving cost), what else can we do?

I ran across an article on UKFCU’s Advice and Education page which talked about February being a good month to reset your spending cycle. Did you know that your spending has different patterns? They may be summarized as:

Living paycheck to paycheck
Using debt to support your lifestyle
Saving what’s left over at month’s end (there never is any)
Pay yourself first

Some people never get beyond the first one or two cycles, but the latter one works best. More information can be found here.
