Rent or Buy?

Posted by John on January 27th, 2012

As Mortgage Loan interest rates stay low and the price of housing nationwide continues to fall, the cost of renting a home has begun to seem less attractive than buying one.
According to Paul Diggle, a housing economist at Capital Economics, if you’re comparing the cost of owning and renting, buying a house may soon be the better choice. However, just looking at rental costs versus a mortgage ignores additional factors, such as taxes, insurance, maintenance, and the potential for housing costs to rise in the future.

You have to be willing to take the above factors, and more, into consideration when making the decision to purchase a home in lieu of renting. In addition to economic factors, other variable come into play, such as how long you intend to stay in the area, yard work (some people enjoy it, others hate it), and future size of your family.

Do It Yourself?

While I was in the service and visiting my parents while on leave, my Mom told me about a plumbing problem that my Dad tried to fix. Turns out that somehow or other he tried to loosen some pipes and attachments that weren’t meant to be loosened (don’t ask) and managed to distort the pipes enough that a plumber, called in to fix my Dad’s handiwork asked “What (as in what creature) did this”? Everyone (alright, most people) knows that we’re supposed to start a savings account.  So how do we do that when we have more month left at the end of our money?  In a nutshell, do things like:

  • Have a set amount automatically deposited into a Savings account every payday.  It could be a small amount or a larger amount, but start now and let it accumulate (plus receive interest).

Retirement Options

Posted by John on October 24th, 2011

My Dad worked all his life for one company from age 17 until retirement, with a 3 year break for sailing around in the Pacific during WWII. In those days, retirement options usually meant working for yourself, or your family business, or starting and staying with the same company, large or small. Retirement income came from your own savings, from selling your business, or from a pension paid by the company you worked for, based on number of years worked, salary and other variables. Social Security, enacted in the 1930’s, was meant to be a supplemental boost to income for retirement years. (more…)
