Departmental File Services (NEMO)

Nemo is a Windows Server 2003 system which acts as an administrative file sharing service utilized by mulitple departments across campus. Students desiring file sharing should use Sweb or Locker.

Nemo utilizes your Active Directory account for authentication. Use the Account Manager to change or reset your password.

Since Nemo uses the Microsoft File Sharing protocols (SMB) to share files, you must use a VPN if you need to access your files from an off-campus system.

This system was designed to facilitate the sharing of standard office documents and files, users who need to store large data archives, email archives, video, high-resolution images, etc. are encouraged to consult UKIT to determine the best mechanism for their needs.

Contact the UKIT Service Desk at (859) 218-HELP (4357) or helpdesk@uky.edu to request access. Other information:

Usage Policy

Every effort is made to provide all users with the disk space they require, but like all shared resources, limitations must be placed on disk usage. To ensure that everyone who needs disk space has access to a reasonable amount, you should keep your disk space cleaned up as much as possible, by using TSM to backup your workstation or archiving to cd/dvd. We make backups of both the Home and Shared directories. Users can request that files be restored, but users are encouraged to make their own backups of files they regard as important. The current backups are kept for 30 days. Members who require a larger quota should contact IT Service Desk at (859) 218-HELP (4357) to make the case for a higher quota.

  1. All shared directories will be associated with a party responsible for authorizing user access to these shared spaces. This authority is usually the director of the department. It is recognized that an individual may be the authorizing authority for a number of different projects each with its own group space. Each authorizing authority, however, has one 100 GB group/project space quota which may be spread over a number of individual directories or projects. That is, the total across all associated projects has an aggregate 100 GB quota for each department.

  2. This policy addresses two types of network disk usage:
    • User home directories which are privately accessible by the user
    • Shared directories which are accessed by multiple collaborators (usually the department)
  3. Note that extended disk space has two costs associated with it (Data backup and Server disk space). Current quotas are:
    • User home directory quota - 1GB (single user access)
    • Group/Project shared directories - 100GB (multiple user access)
  4. The following types of files are not to be stored on the Nemo file server:
    • Email Archives (such as Outlook PST Files) are not allowed in User Home Directories, and will not be backed up if located in Shared Directories. More information about why PST files should not be stored on a file server is available in the following Microsft Knowledge Base Article
    • Multimedia files (MP3, MP4, MPG, WAV, AVI, CAMREC, etc.) should not be stored on this server.
  5. Disk space usage will be monitored in the following manner:
    • Scans will be made at various times throughout the year.
    • Users at = 80% of quota will be notified where they stand after each scan.
    • Users and groups beyond-quota disk usage will be informed, and if they do not clean up their directories, will not be able to create or extend files.
