New Robust E-mail Coming to Campus

When UK's 2007 fall semester begins, students will find some exciting tech changes on campus. Featured is a more "Robust, Resilient, and Redundant" e-mail system consisting of new hardware and software, says Doyle Friskney, UKIT Associate VP. The redundant part means "if one system for delivering e-mail goes down, another one is there to keep it going."

Of course faculty and staff will reap the advantages of the same tech changes.

Previously, faculty, staff and students were receiving their e-mail from U-Connect or Microsoft Exchange--and from a number of different versions of Exchange. Now all of that will be changed over the new Windows Vista and Exchange 2007 from Microsoft.

"Students will receive the software as a part of the tech-service fee that they pay each semester," reported Friskney.

And how is the new mail system more robust or more resilient? It runs smoother and faster on new hardware, and it has a simpler, cleaner menu interface. All students will be on the same software along with faculty and staff, and it's more secure.

Robust Security

Windows Mail also helps protect the user from "spam" and "phishing" attacks that can lead to identity theft.

Manage your Time and Information

If you want a complete system for managing your time and information, you can move up to Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, which works with Windows Vista.

In this more collaborative, robust environment, faculty, staff and students will get anywhere access to their e-mail, voice mail, calendars, and contacts from a variety of clients and devices. Faculty, staff and students will have a single in-box to access all of their important communications-including voice mail, fax, and e-mail, calendars and contacts-avoiding the effort of maintaining separate systems.

Enhanced Search Features

Windows Mail incorporates the Instant Search feature, enabling you to search all of your e-mails, calendars, attachments, addresses, and to-do items. No more spending time organizing messages into different folders so that you'll be able to find them later.

Technical Support

UK's Help Desk will continue to support students, faculty and staff. Help is available at the Help Desk in McVey Hall, contact them by e-mail at helpdesk.uky.edu, by phone at 859-218-HELP (4357) or make an appointment. Some colleges like Engineering and Arts and Sciences have their own technical support operation.
