Mark A. Taylor is an Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Education and Senior Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies at the University of Kentucky. In addition to providing campus-wide leadership for academic advising, Dr. Taylor directs Undergraduate Studies, a comprehensive professional advising office that provides support to exploratory, transfer, and pre-professional students from across campus.

Prior to his arrival at the University of Kentucky in July 2009, Dr. Taylor was the Director of Advising in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities and provided leadership for over 70 staff members throughout 9 advising offices and 15 academic departments.

His responsibilities have included oversight of advisor hiring and promotion processes, Transfer Advising Services, individualized degree programs, new student orientation, and academic standing and policy exception processes. While realizing significant gains in advisor staffing levels and salaries in recent years, Dr. Taylor has led efforts to expand professional advising in academic departments; to enhance cross training and professional growth opportunities for advisors; and to implement more proactive, personalized advising strategies in order to strengthen the student-advisor relationship.

Dr. Taylor serves on the faculty of NACADA's Academic Advising Administrators' Institute, providing guidance on legal and ethical issues in higher education as well as on performance evaluations and professional growth for academic advisors. He is contributing to the upcoming NACADA advising administration monograph by writing about advisor performance appraisal, recognition, and career ladders.

Dr. Taylor previously was an associate director in the Undergraduate Division of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn, he also was the director of Wharton's summer business institute. Dr. Taylor began his career as an academic advisor and instructor at Florida State University, teaching prelaw, ethics, and career development courses.

A West Virginia native, Dr. Taylor graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Furman University with a BA in Political Science. He also holds a JD from the University of Richmond School of Law and a PhD in Higher Education from Florida State University.
