Spotlight on May 2013 Graduates

Linda CunninghamCongratulations…AGAIN…Linda Cunningham!
Linda is graduating UK with her second Master's degree, this one in Social Work. Her first was in Counseling Psychology in 2011. She once again maintained a 4.0 gpa throughout her graduate degree program and was designated as one of the program's Outstanding MSW Graduate Students. She was also named the 2012 Student Social Worker of the Year by the Kentucky Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). She has been inducted into multiple honor societies and has been published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology.

Linda enlisted into the Army in 1979 as a Military Policeman (MP) as a part of the military's initial integrated training program. She received her commission in ROTC from Indiana University ROTC in the Corps of Engineers. She also earned a BS from Indiana University in Accounting. Linda held several staff and leadership positions to include Platoon Leader and Company Commander before leaving Active Duty in 1989. After leaving the service Linda returned to accounting and worked for nearly 10 years for a Fortune 500 Company.
Linda is a wife and mother and an active volunteer within her community.

Matt DierufCongratulations Matt Dieruf!
Matt is graduating from UK with a degree in Electrical Engineering and going straight to work here in Lexington. Matt didn't ride out his senior year nice and easy; no, Matt charged full speed ahead taking on one challenge after another. His efforts paid off in the very tangible form of prize money! Matt is from Lexington and is a US Air Force veteran where he served as a Missile and Space Electronics Maintenance Apprentice.

Nathan EstesCongratulations to Nathan Estes!
Nathan is graduating UK with a degree and honors (3.8 gpa) in Secondary Mathematics Education and has been accepted into the Teach for America Corps program. He has also applied to graduate school at Georgetown College. Nathan is another home-grown Lexingtonian. After graduating high school in 1998 he joined the US Marines where he served in communications and civil affairs. In addition to some time in Okinawa, he deployed to Iraq in 2004. Nathan left the Marines after 7 years and joined the labor force. He left an IT manager position to pursue his goal of a teaching degree with UK just 3 short years ago. He has been an outspoken supporter of student veterans on campus.

Andre GeertsemaCongratulations Andre Geertsema!
Andre is graduating UK with a degree in Computer Engineering and starting his new job with Lexmark here in Lexington in June as a Firmware Engineer. His journey began in South Africa with his birth in 1988. He immigrated to Australia in 1998 and then came to us here in Lexington in 2001. After graduating high school, Andre enlisted in the Kentucky National Guard in 2006 as an infantryman. In 2009 he started the Guard's Officer Candidate program and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Signal Corp in August of 2010. He went on to deploy with his unit in 2011 in support of Operation New Dawn as the Battalion's Communications Officer.
