Gabehart Winners Announced!

We apologize for the delay in announcing the fiction winner. Our judges were deadlocked over two stories, "On the Eve of Departure" and "By Appointment." Thinking that we would award two prizes, we checked the authors' identities and discovered that both were submitted by the same author,
Lisa K. Buchanan of San Francisco. Congratulations, Lisa, on two wonderful stories.

Congratulations also to our winners in poetry and cretive nonfiction:

E. Gail Chandler, Shelbyville, Kentucky, for "One Room School" (poetry)

Kelly Bancroft, Youngstown, Ohio, for "Singer Sewing Machine No. 66" (creative nonfiction)

Each year, the Kentucky Women Writers Conference offers opportunities for both emerging and established voices to be singled our and cheered on by our community. The Gabehart Prize is our way of honoring our good friend, patron, and long-time director who took the decade of the 1980s to show us how it's done. Three prizes are awarded, in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Each winner receives $100, two 2-day passes, and the opportunity to read her winning manuscript at the conference.

Congratulations to our 2007 winners!

Kate Buckley, Laguna Beach, California, for "Dead Horse Trail," (poetry)

Donna McClanahan, Irvine, Kentucky, for "Blackberries" (creative nonfiction)

Bev Olert, Paris, Kentucky, for "Unbroken Chain" (fiction)

Come to a place where the skylines move like creek-beds, where people understand craft as a way of life. One weekend the best women artists from around the world venture to this place to exchange ideas, process, performance—calling us to newly imagine what it means to be a writer.
