Rapid Filer

This document is being presented in conjunction with the Publishing on the World-Wide Web class. It is intended to outline a step-by-step process for moving HTML Documents from a PC running Microsft Windows and Lan Workplace to the World-Wide Web server (www.uky.edu). If you have further questions about this procedure, please contact the Help Desk. If you have questions or comments about this document, please contact Trish Smith.

Quick Steps:

  1. Start Rapid Filer
  2. Connect to the server
  3. Send the "site umask 022" command
  4. Change to the correct directories on your PC and on the server
  5. Copy the files
  6. Rename the files (from .htm to .html)

Detailed Steps:

  1. Go to the Lan Workplace group in the Program manager and double-click on Rapid Filer.

  2. Enter the Remote Host Name: www.uky.edu, User Name: your userid, and Password. When your account is created the password is set to uk#########, where ######### is your student/employee number.

  3. Click Connect. The UPPER window lists the files on your PC, while the LOWER window lists the files in your account on the WWW server.

  4. Click View on the menu bar. Go down to Enable Protocol Window and Click.

  5. The Protocol Window will appear.

  6. You should type the command site umask 022 in the Command To Send Window and press Send. The server will respond with two lines of information.

  7. Close the window.

  8. Double-click on the www directory in the lower window (on the WWW server). Click on the c:\ in the upper window.

  9. The Change Current Directory window will appear. Type the location of your HTML files on your computer and click Change.

  10. The upper window will now list the files in the directory that you specified. The lower window will list the files in the WWW directory in your account. All your HTML files must reside in the WWW directory on the server, or the server software will not be able to find them.

  11. Click on the file in the upper window (on your hard drive) that you want to transfer to the server. Then click the Copy button on the right side of the screen.

  12. The file will now also be listed on the server in the lower window. Click on the file that you just transferred and then click the rename button on the right side of the screen.

  13. The Rename Files window will appear. Change the extention from htm to html and click Yes.

  14. The file will be listed in the lower window with an extention of html and is ready to be accessed with a browser.
