On Monday, March 18th, KWRRI presented the 2008 Bill Barfield Award for Outstanding Contributions to Water Resources Research to University of Kentucky faculty member Dr. Gail Brion.

Dr. Brion has been a civil engineering professor at UK since receiving her doctorate from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1995. During her time with the university, she has set up her own specialized environmental virology research laboratory and, along with Dr. Alan Fryar, received an NSF-EPSCoR grant to establish the Environmental Research and Training Laboratory (ERTL), a world-class, shared-use environmental research lab used by scientists across the Commonwealth. Her own research focuses on water treatment, water reuse, fate of pathogens in water environments, control of waterbourne disease, disinfection, public health, and environmental virology.

The Barfield Award was established in 2005 to honor the Commonwealth's foremost researchers in water-related fields. The award ceremony took place at the Annual KWRRI Symposium in Lexington, Kentucky.
