On Monday, March 17th, KWRRI Associate Director Jim Kipp announced the recipients of the 2008-09 Student Enhancement Grant Recipients through the USGS 104b Annual Institute Program. The projects, faculty advisors, and recipients are:

  • "Evaluation of Short-Term Soil and Nutrient Loss Following a Prescribed Burn in the Crooked Creek Watershed" (Faculty Advisors: Mike Kemp, Environmental Engineering Technology, Murray State University; Andrew Kellie, Civil Engineering Technology, Murray State University) Student Recipients: Laura G. Jewell (undergraduate, Environmental Eng Technology) and Shi-Men Shen (graduate student, Management of Technology)

  • "The Effect of Clay Mineralogy on the Infiltration Capacity of Grass Lawns" (Faculty Advisor: Samuel Boateng, Department of Physics and Geology, Northern Kentucky University) Student Recipient: Georgia Knuehl (undergraduate, Geology)

  • "Identification of Human and Animal Fecal Sources in Central Kentucky Watersheds by PCR of 16sDNA Markers from Host Specific Fecal Anaerobes" (Faculty Advisors: Gail Brion, Civil Engineering, University of Kentucky; Alan Fryar, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Kentucky) Student Recipients: Tricia Coakley (graduate student, Earth and Environmental Sciences) and an Engineering student to be selected at a later date.

  • "Development of a Composite Sediment Transport Model Applicable to Watersheds in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky" (Faculty Advisor: James Fox, Civil Engineering, University of Kentucky) Student Recipient: Joseph Russo (graduate student, Civil Engineering)

  • "Comparison of Eastern Hemlock and Hardwood Dominated Forest Stream Assemblages" (Faculty Advisor: Sherry Harrel, Biological Sciences, Eastern Kentucky University) Student Recipient: Aric Payne (graduate student, Biology)

  • "A Comparison of Methods for Measuring Suspended Sediment and Discharge in Wadeable Streams" (Faculty Advisor: Christine McMichael, Institute for Regional Analysis & Public Policy, Morehead; Steven Reid, Earth System Science, Morehead State University) Student Recipients: Susan Brown (undergraduate, Biology) and Thom Platt (undergraduate, Biology)

  • "Evaluating Carbon Pool Patterns in Agricultural and Forested Streams along Kentucky Lake" (Faculty Advisor: Iin Handayani, Soil Science, Murray State University) Student Recipients: Melissa Graves (graduate student, Agronomy and Soil Science) and Robert Tokosh (graduate student, Agronomy and Soil Science)

  • "Inventory and Assessment of Combined Sewer Overflow Disharges within Kentucky Communities" (Faculty Advisor: Lindell Ormsbee, Civil Engineering, University of Kentucky) Student Recipient: Elizabeth Coyle (graduate student, Civil Engineering)
