The US EPA's Office of Water provides information on water issues in general and on watershed management in particular. EPA also provides a site to let you surf your watershed on the web, which provides a nationwide locator tool for subbasins and a status report for each subbasin. The Kentucky River Authority has posted a number of interesting subject maps of the basin, including some depicting land use, locks and dams, and boat ramps.

For information on the statewide watershed initiative, visit the Kentucky Watershed Management website, where you can find, among other resources, the Framework Document that outlines the watershed management process.

The Kentucky River Basin Status Report, published in the first year of each five-year cycle, summarizes the state of the basin. The Monitoring Strategy lists sampling sites and protocols used during the data collection phase of the cycle during the second year. The Prioritization Formula guidelines (in PDF format) provide technical background about the methods used in initial stages of watershed ranking during the third year. For information on current activities and how you can participate, contact the Kentucky River Basin Coordinator or check our Feedback & Contacts page.

The PRIDE program organizes local clean-up projects and other initiatives in forty counties in the southeast section of the state. Kentucky River Watershed Watch also offers opportunities for citizen involvement in watershed protection.

Printed sources of information about waterways in the basin may be available from your library:

Sources and Background for Watershed Reports

Geography. Physiographic regions, topography, and rates of surface runoff and groundwater drainage were derived from The River Basin Water Quality Management Plan for Kentucky (Frankfort, Ky.: Division of Water Quality, Department for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, 1977. Volume 8: Kentucky River Basin). Geologic information was derived from "Generalized Hydrogeologic Map of the Kentucky River Basin" (compiled by D. I. Carey. Lexington, Ky.: Kentucky Geological Survey, 1994).

Waterways. Descriptions of waterways were derived from EPA Reach File 3 and/or NHD GIS data and from maps constructed from those data by KWRI staff. Some information was verified by reference to Kentucky Atlas and Gazetteer (Yarmouth, ME: DeLorme, 1997).

Land and water use. Land use, drinking water systems, and permits for discharges were derived from GIS coverages from EPA and Kentucky DOW.

Agency data assessment. Data assessments and related information was derived from Kentucky's 2000 305(b) report.

Watershed rankings. Ranking formula calculations were modified from Watershed Priority Formula Application Guidelines and Data Requirements (available here). See Ranking Metrics at this site for details about data sources.

Volunteer data. Water quality collected by Kentucky River Watershed Watch. Kentucky Division of Water Memo on Use of Volunteer Data.
