The Department of Physiology is a diverse community of basic science researchers. Our areas of research include cardiovascular, neuroscience, metabolic disease and aging. Within those areas of research are 37 primary faculty, 8 joint faculty, 16 trainees and numerous laboratory staff. With over $6.2M in extramural support in FY16, our award-winning investigators are making major advances in biomedical research. Our training programs are preparing scientists for successful careers in academia, industry and government. Our education faculty touch the lives of over 2,000 undergraduate, professional and graduate students each academic year.
The Graduate Program of the Department of Physiology is a Ph.D. program. It is designed to educate and train students to be competent research scientists and teachers of physiology. The main program objectives focus on providing students with the capacity to carry out independent research and to be trained in the teaching of physiology. The department is committed to providing each student with an environment that promotes independent development and habits of life long scholarship as well as a broad base of knowledge of the principles of molecular, cellular, and organ-system physiology.
Students are first admitted to the Integrated Biomedical Sciences curriculum, an undifferentiated first-year core curriculum that serves as the entry point for six doctoral programs housed in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
