In today’s competitive health care landscape, it’s more important than ever for health sciences students to receive a dynamic education steeped in clinical knowledge and hands-on experiences. That’s why our Bachelor of Science in Human Health Sciences is one of our fastest-growing degree programs. An HHS degree provides you with a comprehensive look at health care practices, a solid foundation in basic science, and robust opportunities to engage in real-world clinical experiences. Our graduates are prepared to pursue advanced degree programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, optometry, medical research, and more.

HHS graduates are prepared to pursue advanced degree programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant studies, athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, optometry, medical research, and more. HHS provides undergraduate students with a comprehensive look at health care practices, a solid foundation in basic science, and robust opportunities to engage in real-world clinical experiences.

The HHS Program focuses on developing your knowledge and skills including:

  • Strong foundation in the basic sciences
  • Ethical behavior in delivery of all health care activities and services
  • Effective participation within interprofessional health care teams
  • Culturally-sensitive health care services
  • Effective oral and written communication and use of technology
  • Attention to patient safety and health care quality

Classes & Requirements

What You'll Study

Every student has individual needs both academically and non-academically. For this reason, as well as our challenging curriculum, the Human Health Sciences program features individualized advising.  Each student is expected to schedule two (2) advising appointments per semester with their Academic Advisor.


UK Core Requirements

Human Health Sciences students may elect to complete all UK Core requirements with any eligible course in each category. Due to major requirements, students are encouraged to make the following selections: CHE 105 and 111 for Natural, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, PSY 100 for Social Science, MA 137 for Quantitative Foundations, and STA 296 for Statistical Inferential Reasoning.

Graduation Requirements

In order to receive a Bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in Human Health Sciences, a student must complete courses that fulfill the UK CORE requirements and all required HHS related courses for their respective professional track.

Graduation Composition and Communication Requirement

Human Health Sciences students will complete HHS 350 Health Policy and Politics or HHS 453 Cultural Competence in Healthcare to satisfy the Graduation Composition and Communication Requirement.

Research Opportunities

The College of Health Sciences (CHS) is offering an undergraduate certificate in Undergraduate Research in Human Health Sciences. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage and recognize undergraduate students who devote a significant portion of their undergraduate education to scholarly and research pursuits within CHS. The Certificate in Undergraduate Research in Human Health Sciences provides any UK undergraduate student with the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge in interdisciplinary clinical, translational, and basic research in the human health sciences fields.

Living Learning Program

The Interprofessional Healthcare Residential College (IHRC) is a high-impact, living-learning program designed for highly-motivated students who have a passion for healthcare. The IHRC is the perfect way to immerse yourself in healthcare. Through connected coursework and co-curricular activities, students in the program enjoy an array of benefits, including smaller class sizes and enhanced study groups. IHRC students also gain special access to unique, healthcare-related opportunities, including undergraduate research, service-learning, and ongoing networking opportunities with faculty and clinicians as well as a dedicated team of live-in peer mentors.
