The Honors Program





The T.W. Lewis and Ruth Jones Lewis Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students attending the University of Kentucky.  Each year we award five T.W. Lewis Scholarships to students from Fayette county and five Ruth Jones Lewis Scholarships from a 29 county area of Eastern Kentucky.  Each recipient receives a total award of $20,000 which is paid over 4 years and is subject to annual renewal requirements.


The purpose of the T.W. Lewis and Ruth Jones Lewis Scholarship Program is to provide high potential student leaders with self-assessment tools, career counseling, learning opportunities, and financial aid so that they can reach their full potential and have a positive impact on the world.


Applicants for the T.W. Lewis and Ruth Jones Lewis Scholarship Program must be full-time Kentucky residents who plan to complete high school in the spring of 2016, and must be enrolled as a full-time student.  Awards will be granted on the basis of:

  • Leadership Potential
  • Entrepreneurial Potential
  • Strong Personal Character
  • Intellectual Ability
  • Financial Need

Applicants will be chosen from Bell, Breathitt, Carter, Clay, Elliott, Estill, Fayette, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, McCreary, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Powell, Rockcastle, Whitley or Wolfe counties.

Academic criteria for admission is the same as for all freshman applicants in the Honors Program.  For students accepted to the Honors Program for Fall 2014 the average ACT is 32 and average unweighted GPA is 3.89, but applications from all interested students are given full consideration regardless of test scores or GPA.


The T.W. Lewis and Ruth Jones Lewis Scholarship Program is designed to be a four-year award at $5,000 per year.  Funds will be paid directly to the university in the amount of $2,500 for the initial semester.  Additional funds will be awarded in the amount of $2,500 per semester subject to renewal requirements.


Renewal requirements for the T.W. Lewis and Ruth Jones Lewis Scholarship are to:

  • Participate in custom Honors courses
  • Participate in Career Counseling
  • Complete an annual written update consisting of an academic, extracurricular and career plan
  • Perform 10 hours of community service per academic year
  • Attend an annual celebration event in the Fall semester
  • Live in the Honors Residence Hall a minimum of freshman year
  • Read two books per semester, distributed by the Honors Program and write a 500 word summary of each
  • Stay on track for a four year graduation, i.e. 15 credit hours/semester on a cumulative basis
  • Maintain all Honors Program graduation requirements
  • Maintain good standing with UK


Scholarship recipients will be selected on a competitive basis by using the following criteria:

  • Leadership potential - extracurricular activities, athletic involvement and/or community service
  • Entrepreneurial potential - based on high school extracurricular activities and career plan
  • Strong personal character - as reflected in application
  • Academic performance - class rank, GPA, SAT or ACT scores, and course difficulty
  • Financial need - successful candidates must demonstrate an unfulfilled financial need whereby this scholarship would create an opportunity that was otherwise not available




The T.W. Lewis and Ruth Jones Lewis Scholarship application must be submitted by January 15, 2016.
Interviews will be conducted in February/March 2016.
Scholarship awards will be announced by April 15, 2016.
