Are the days of free-standing clickers numbered?

The Scholars received an interesting email yesterday from an instructor who asked:

"The days of free-standing clickers are numbered. Why buy extra hardware and software when most everyone already has what they need? (The makers of GPS receivers are learning the same lesson.) About a year ago I asked my students, Can you access the internet in this room right now? In a room of 40, all but 2 hands went up. Between smartphones, laptops, netbooks, tablets, and eReaders with web browsers, you're hard-pressed to find someone who can't access the internet if you provide them with wifi."

This is a very good question - why, indeed, would instructors ask their students to purchase a $32 response device instead of allowing them to purchase a $15 software license for their laptop or mobile device? (Prices reference MSRP for TurningPoint device and 1 yr license sold at UK.) On the surface, it doesn't seem to make sense, but here are three common reasons why instructors do this.

Adobe Acrobat X's text recognition tools makes life easier

https://download.uky.edu now has Adobe Acrobat X (Windows or Mac) available to students and faculty for free. For those of you who want to transition from reading paper copies of articles and book chapters, Acrobat X's text recognition tools will allow you to go completely digital. This suite of tools will even work for scanned images of documents and will transform a pdf full of images of pages to a pdf with searchable text that can be annotated (highlight, write notes, underline, etc.) and allows copying and pasting of text.

Using Attempt Statistics and Download Results in Grade Center

Curious about which questions students missed most often on a blackboard assessment? Or the answers a specific student made for each question on a test? Well blackboard can provide answers to these inquiries by using the Attempt Statistics and Download Results from the drop down menu on the columns found in the Grade Center. These tools are helpful by allowing instructors to see which questions students had more difficulty with, leading to either rewriting the question for future examinations or perhaps not counting it towards the end grade for the assignment.

Use VirtualDen to gain access to programs on campus that you may not have at home, such as some Microsoft Office and Adobe Software. This video highlights which programs are available for use, and how to navigate the application for unexperienced users. VirtualDen is available for use at apps.uky.edu with a valid Link Blue ID and password.

The video below is a tutorial of how to reset your link blue password using the UK Account manager, which can be found at ukam.uky.edu. This portal contains the options for self-reset questions, password reset and expiration notifications, as well as managing the passwords of your live@edu and @g.uky.edu accounts. Simply follow the steps included in this video to understand how to navigate and correctly use the account manager to reset your password.
