VPN for Mac OS X 10.6 and Above

The instructions on this page apply to users with Macintosh OS X 10.6 and above.
Users with Macintosh OS X 10.4 and 10.5 systems should follow these instructions instead.

To create and configure a connection to UK's virtual private network (VPN), follow the steps below.
This tutorial requires that you have administrative access to your computer.

Configure the UK VPN Service

Create a new VPN network service:

  • Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
  • Click on the Network icon
  • If the padlock in the lower left corner is locked, click it and enter the userID and password of a user with administrative priviledges to make changes
  • Click the + button to create a new service
  • From the Interface menu, select VPN
  • From the VPN Type menu, choose Cisco IPSec
  • In the Service Name field, name the service. Example: "UK VPN"

Configure the service:

  • In the Server Address field, enter 128.163.55.43
  • In the Account Name field, enter your link blue user ID
  • Leave the Password field blank. You will be prompted to enter your password each time you connect.
  • Click Authentication Settings
  • In the Machine Authentication drop-down window, enter
    • Shared Secret: ukyedu
    • Group Name: ukyedu
  • Click OK

Test your connection:

  • Click Connect to test your settings
  • If prompted to apply your changes, click Apply
  • If successful, the Status will switch to Connected, the Connect Time counter will start running, and the VPN IP Address will be displayed.
  • Click Disconnect to end the session.

Enable quick access (optional):

  • For quick access to the VPN service, check the box beside "Show VPN status in menu bar." This will add a VPN icon with a drop down menu to your menu bar for easy connection and disconnection from all VPN services configured on the machine. The VPN icon will also display the time counter when connected.

Save the new VPN service:

  • Click Apply and close the Network Preferences Pane.

Please note that for security purposes, you will be prompted to enter your link blue password each time you connect to the service. This password cannot be "remembered" or saved in the system keychain.

Starting a VPN Connection to the UK Network

If you enabled the quick access toolbar icon:

  • Click the VPN icon in the toolbar at the top of your screen.
  • Select "Connect UK VPN".
  • When prompted, enter your link blue userID and password.
  • The icon should display the word "Connecting." If successful, this will be replaced with a running time counter.

If you did not enable the quick access toolbar icon:

  • Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
  • Click on the Network icon
  • Click the UK VPN service in the left column.
  • Click the Connect button.
  • When prompted, enter your link blue userID and password.
  • If successful, the Status will switch to Connected, the Connect Time counter will start running, and the VPN IP Address will be displayed.
  • You may close the System Preferences window while connected to the VPN.

Closing a VPN Connection to the UK Network

If you enabled the quick access toolbar icon:

  • Click the VPN icon in the toolbar at the top of your screen.
  • Select "Disconnect UK VPN".
  • The icon should display the word "Disconnecting," then return to its default state.

If you did not enable the quick access toolbar icon:

  • Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
  • Click on the Network icon
  • Click the UK VPN service in the left column.
  • Click the Disonnect button.
  • When the connection is closed, the Status will switch to Not Connected.
  • Close the System Preferences window.
