Community Abandoned, Community Embraced

Monday, February 20, 7:30pm
Marksbury Building Auditorium (corner of Rose and Maxwell Streets)

The Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) is delighted to present Dr. Michael Bernstein, Provost of Tulane University, who will give a talk entitled "Tulane University Since Hurricane Katrina: Crisis and Change in the Wake of Catastrophe." Poet Nikky Finney will open the event by reading from her National Book Award winning collection Head Off and Split. A reception, sponsored by University Engagement, will follow.

As you may know, Provost Bernstein has been leading the charge to recruit students to Tulane with the theme of rebuilding New Orleans post-Katrina. We hope his presence here will be a catalyst to reinvigorate discussions between the University and community. You can view a video of Provost Bernstein's message below.

And, the video he commissioned, which is a moving tribute to New Orleans and Tulane's Class of 2009.

Michael Bernstein is a professor of economic history, having studied the Great Depression extensively. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Tulane refocused attention to service learning and social entrepreneurialism in an effort to help rebuild New Orleans. Bernstein helped implement the Renewal Plan, which focused on undergraduate education and providing public service opportunities, requiring that all students take a public service class as part of their core curriculum. In the wake of the hurricane, Tulane has established a Center for Public Service, an Office of Social Entrepreneurship Initiatives, and has played a vital role in rebuilding New Orleans.

This event is brought to you by UK's Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT), with generous co-sponsorship from the Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence, Community Engagement, Student Affairs, University Engagement, Center for Community Outreach and Undergraduate Studies.
