The hybrid course (also referred to as “blended course” or “blended learning”), is a courses where the students’ time is divided between a traditional classroom and an online environment. Flipped classes (where students watch a video lecture on their own and then class time is spent doing exercises or in discussion) is right now the most recognizable form of a hybrid course but is by no means the only one. A hybrid course will ask students not just to consume content online, but to participate online and in other places and spaces outside of the classroom setting. Often, instead of meeting in the classroom during every class period, the students and instructor will meet approximately 50% of the time during the scheduled class period, and the rest of the time they spend working on their own or in groups in an online or other environment.
The idea is not that the online work or materials are supplemental, but that they actually transform the learning process; the technology and the teaching inform each other, rather than simply sit next to one another inside and outside of the classroom. This takes a great deal of practice and preparation on the part of the faculty, as well as a willingness of the students to embrace a more experiential and participatory form of learning.
