Critical Conversations About Race and Teaching: Navigating Conflict and Building Bridges
Tuesday, January 31, 2017 - 2:30pm
Workshop concludes at 4:00.
Conflict in the classroom risks suppressing dialogue and sustained engagement. This is especially true when tensions arise from issues of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and other encounters with privilege and oppression. Discomfort can be compounded if instructors feel unprepared to facilitate constructive conversations due to lack of perceived expertise, fear of poor evaluations, or simply from being caught off guard. This workshop prepares instructors to courageously manage and hold space for multiple or differing perspectives in the classroom. Participants will learn strategies for stimulating productive discussion while maintaining an inclusive learning environment.
The interactive nature of this workshop requires that we cap registration at 30 participants. Registration for this workshop will close at the end of the day on Friday, January 27.
