The Kentucky Young Researchers Program, established in the 1996-97 academic year, was originally designed to support the introduction of high school students to the excitement of research and discovery and to encourage the future enrollment of outstanding students at the University of Kentucky.

Historically, students from various central Kentucky high schools have worked with UK faculty on a wide variety of research projects. Today, high school students from across the state work on research projects under the direct supervision of UK faculty mentors. Sometimes this is done for academic credit at the high-school level, and sometimes it is initiated by the student as an extracurricular activity. We hope to attract such outstanding students to UK as undergraduates and hopefully, in future years, as graduate or professional students.

The program is open to UK faculty mentors of high-school juniors or seniors, with up to $500 per student made available annually to the academic department or program. The funds are provided to support the student's work or for travel to present the project. At the end of each project, all student participants are required to submit a written report of the project findings and conclusions, where applicable. The report is to be submitted to the faculty mentor, with a copy forwarded to the KYRP program office (bessie.guerrant@uky.edu).

Individuals volunteering in research at UK HealthCare for personal experience or as required for academic credit shall be “onboarded” through the department of Observation and Learning Experience (OLE).  Review additional information and submit an onboarding request via the OLE website.  For more information, please contact Jasmyn D. Weyer at (jasmyn.weyer@uky.edu).

Faculty mentors should familiarize themselves with the following policy: UK Policy for Minors in Labs.  Also, faculty may review information about mentoring non-UK students here.
