Biostatistics & Data Management Core

The Core serves as a data collection and analytic hub for the UK-ADC by:

• Maintaining a centralized database of information collected by all cores and affiliated research projects
• Providing expertise on experimental design and statistical analyses
• Interacting dynamically with other cores to contribute to the clinical, neuropathological and educational/ outreach of the ADC

One of the primary objectives of this core is to maintain a centralized database of all information collected by the ADC cores, pilot projects, and AD and aging research studies. Activities that support this objective include:

• Ensuring confidentiality and security of data
• Developing data collection forms and entering data
• Providing monthly summaries to the ADC Executive Committee
• Creating appropriate subsets of data for approved projects and investigators
• Reporting accurate and complete datasets to the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center

The core also provides expertise on experimental design and analysis to ADC cores, pilot projects, and other aging and AD research initiatives. Activities that support this objective include:

• Consulting with investigators on all projects, grant submissions, presentations, and manuscripts
• Reviewing all ADC pilot projects for statistical content
• Collaborating with other ADCs on special projects of mutual interest
• Incorporating advances in statistical methodology to interpret and analyze data collected

This core contributes to the literature with innovative studies on statistical methodology in AD research and participates in the training of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and young investigators.

The BDMC is investigating risk factors associated with the UK-ADC transition/translation diagram (figure below left) by making the intervening states transient and accounting for the competing risk of death (figure below right) taken from Salazar et al., et al. Stat Med. 2007;26:568-580.

Data

There is a wealth of information available on our longitudinal cohort.  For example, our centralized database consists of clinical data on 4,765 subjects. This includes 1,000 subjects enrolled as cognitively intact at entry having 7,009 person years of follow-up and of these 266 have come to autopsy after 2,321 person years of follow-up.  This is a critical resource for investigators, whose requests for snapshots of the centralized database have risen to an average of 7 requests per month in the past year.
