ConnectEd: A Randomized Controlled Trial Connecting through Educational Training is a research study at the University of Kentucky funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The study’s purpose is to identify the most effective training for incoming UK students to reduce violence and substance abuse.
ConnectEd is completely voluntary. Study participation includes a training element. Completion of the training element for this study does count as your Haven and AlcoholEdu mandatory training.
If you decide not to participate and/or do not complete the study training, you must complete both Haven and AlcoholEdu to remove any holds. This is UK’s training policy.
If you choose to participate in ConnectEd, you will be one of the first students to do so. Your participation will help campus decision-makers determine which training aspects lead to a safer University of Kentucky campus for everyone to enjoy.
In addition, you will also receive a certificate of completion, a free meal, and a $40 American Express gift card as compensation for your time. Your training attendance will also be used to count for your mandatory trainings (Haven and AlcoholEdu). UK Plus account dollars will be provided to you if you complete follow up surveys sent to you by smartphone or email.
This study is ONLY for incoming UK undergraduates. You have to be between the ages of 17-24 years old.
To participate, complete the survey waiting for you in your email. After completing the survey, you will be allowed to attend the training at 1:00pm on the following dates:
June 20, 21, 22, 23, 27, and 28
July 6, 7, 11, 12, 13 and 14.
Students who are attending orientation may choose to complete their training on the second day of your seeblueU orientation in order to not conflict with other scheduled items. Students who are not attending seeblueU orientation, have already attended Merit Weekends, and those local to the Lexington area may complete their training on any of the above dates.
Initial survey invitations will be released in early June for completion. These surveys will be sent directly to your UKY email address at email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com. This link is unique to you and should not be shared with others. If upon checking your email you have not yet received an invitation from us, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance.
Training dates can be viewed on the Training Dates page.
To sign up for training you first have to complete the initial survey. At the end of the survey the list of available dates and times will appear and you may then sign up for your preferred training.
If you agree to participate and complete this first brief survey, you will be randomly assigned to participate in one of four different 3-hour training programs. While you will only be assigned to one training session, the different trainings focus on substance abuse and/or violence prevention and are conducted either in-person or on a computer. All trainings will take place on UK's campus in the early evening. Attending this training lifts UK’s academic hold placed on your account for the required Haven and Alcohol Edu online trainings.
In the Fall and Spring semesters, you will receive an invitation to complete two short, follow-up surveys (takes about 5-10 minutes). These surveys will ask about experiences that you may have encountered while at college. Throughout the academic year, you will also receive push notifications to answer questions on your smartphone via text or MyUK App.
Training dates can be viewed on the Training Dates page, the session will begin at 1:00pm. There will be a meal provided and upon conclusion of the training you will receive your $40 American Express gift card and your training attendance will be used to count for your mandatory trainings (Haven and AlcoholEdu).
