NEW INFORMATION: Blackboard has announced that current customers (that includes UK) may use the Blackboard platform to deliver free and open MOOCs. We will have more information about this opportunity as soon as it becomes available to us.
UK's Blackboard system contract is based on the number of users and is paid in a "per FTE" (full time equivalent) range. To offer MOOCs on Blackboard, UK would need to create a separate "public" instance that does not require link blue authentication and then budget to increase costs based on a much larger user base. (Like most relationships, "it's complicated.")
On the other hand, Blackboard offers a free-use system called CourseSites and Instructure's Canvas offers a free-use system called Canvas Network. Each offers the instructor a limited number of free course "shells" (or sites), and they can be used for MOOCs that are cost-free to those enrolled. These are great options for individual instructors who want to try casting a wider net.
Some older versions of web browsers are no longer supported by the University of Kentucky and/or Coursera. For example if using Internet Explorer 8 a viewing issues is likely occur. Coursera itself requires Internet Explorer 9.0 or higher. Visit Coursera's support information.

When UK received this opportunity, Academic Planning, Analytics and Technologies (APAT) analyzed student failure and withdrawal rates to determine which areas challenged incoming and current students most. Both Chemistry and Psychology were, according to data, among those most challenging to UK students.
Other areas emerged, as well, and discussions occurred with faculty leadership for several months to determine what areas were prepared to develop modules quickly for a 2014 spring launch. It should be emphasized that the development in those two areas is simply a first step that establishes a relationship with Coursera.
Students receive feedback in Coursera in a variety of ways. The best way to experience the feedback is to visit Coursera and explore various courses by signing up for a few (you can withdraw easily enough if you are simply in exploration mode).
The UK courses will include a self-assessment, but other information is still forthcoming as the courses are currently in development.
These courses, really in module format, will not carry UK credit. UK is not limited to non-credit courses, and after faculty review and discussion that may be a future possibility.
