Nick Puckett will be co-directing a workshop titled, "Beyond Mechanics Research Cluster" at Smart Geometry 2012, with Mariana Ibanez (Harvard GSD) and Simon Kim (uPenn). The five day workshop will develop responsive clothing/cladding prototypes using shape-memory polymer and hydrogel. This workshop uses Puckett's previous research on Project BlackBox a custom-built device used to manufacture responsive materials.
"This cluster provides the opportunity for architectural designers to participate in the formulation, manufacturing, and implementation of Responsive Polymers. The cluster will investigate methods for designing the form and behavior of multi-scalar prototypes from a molecular level through to material assemblies."
Smart Geomtry 2012 will be held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, in upstate New York from 19-24 March, 2012. The workshop and conference will gather a global community of innovators and pioneers in the fields of architecture, design and engineering.
