Bias Incident Response Team

The Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT) is the University’s official system for reporting acts of bias, hatred, and identity-based violence.  The BIRT has no role in any disciplinary decisions involving BIRT reports

BIRT Members represent the following offices, divisions, and departments:

  • Associate Provost for Student and Academic Life
  • Bias Incident Support Services
  • Counseling Center
  • Dean of Students Office
  • Office of Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity
  • Office of Legal Counsel
  • Office of Institutional Diversity
  • Police Department
  • Public Relations

How do I report an act of bias, hatred, and/or identity-based violence?

To Report an instance of bias, hatred, racism, or identity-based violence, please go to

http://www.uky.edu/vipcenter/content/bias-incident-support

What happens once a BIRT report is submitted?

This form goes to the Bias Incident Response Coordinator (BIRC) during normal business hours and is not monitored after hours, on weekends, or during official university holidays.  The BIRC is responsible for reviewing the report and getting it to the appropriate University officials.  Reports can be made anonymously.

There are two types of BIRT reports:

  • INFORMATION ONLY
    • Reports are used to track trends and help guide campus programming
    • The reporter has no expectation of any action by the University
  • TAKE ACTION
    • The reporter expects the University to take some sort of action. TAKE ACTION reports are forwarded on the appropriate University official for further review and/or possible investigation, which could be but is not limited to:
      • Dean of Students
      • Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity
      • UK Police Department
      • Any other University entity deemed appropriate

Reports containing contact information for either the target and/or reporter will generate an outreach email from Bias Incident Support Services explaining the support and advocacy available.
