Bluegrass Angels / BGA Venture Funds
The first organized investor group in Kentucky, the Bluegrass Angels (BGA) is comprised of 63 accredited investors each with expertise in a variety of business sectors. The BGA invests primarily in Kentucky startups with a focus on spinoff companies from UK research. Many of the individual members are actively involved with the startups they invest in and are on the board of directors. There are two venture funds. The first fund is fully invested.
Since 2004, the BGA has invested in 21 startups, providing $4.7 million in seed capital which was leveraged to $59 million in total venture funding.
The Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship helped develop the Bluegrass Angels and in 2010 screened more than 100 deals. The University of Kentucky is an investor in both venture funds through Kentucky Technology Inc., UK's for-profit corporation.
