UK Employee email information

UK Employee email service will be updated from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 beginning in early January 2012. The upgrade will be non-disruptive and most users will notice little change. Web access will also receive a “face lift” with the Exchange 2010 upgrade and users may notice a change in the color scheme of the logon page when accessing their email via the web.

Migration Timeline:

The migration to Exchange 2010 will begin January 2, 2012 and end by March 2012.

Exchange 2010 Key Benefits:

  • A default mailbox size of 1.5 GB, six times the current default.
  • Access to e-mail, voice mail, instant messaging from virtually any platform, Web-browser, or device.
  • Improved scheduling and configuring for resource mailbox calendar processing.
  • Individual management of distribution groups.
  • Ability to appoint a moderator to regulate messages sent to a distribution group.

Preparing for the Exchange 2010 update:

  • Verify Microsoft Windows machines have Outlook 2010 or 2007 installed.
  • Verify MacOS X machines have Entourage 2008 or Outlook 2011 installed.
  • Users of older versions should upgrade as soon as possible.

Exchange 2010 FAQs

FAQs are available at http://www.uky.edu/ukit/content/exchange-2010-faq

Exchange Public Folder Users:

Please note, while Exchange 2010 supports Public Folders, they are not available in cloud based mail services. As UK investigates moving more services into the cloud, support for Exchange Public Folders is likely to be unavailable. Please begin using alternatives, such as SharePoint and Exchange resource mailboxes, immediately. No new Public Folders will be created or mail-enabled.

Student email information

The University of Kentucky’s student email service is provided by Google Apps and Windows Live. These providers fall into the category of “cloud computing,” meaning that applications, file storage and email accounts are housed on off-campus servers and can all be accessed through a variety of devices such as laptops, smart phones and tablets. The email services offer students expanded mailboxes, additional collaboration and production tools while costing the university less money than the previous email service.

Students have the option to choose either a Google Gmail or a Microsoft Live account, but their Universal Email Address remains “John.L.Doe@uky.edu”.

UK Medical students in colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Nursing and Public Health have the option to access an Exchange account due to health information privacy regulations. UK Student Employees have the option to access an Exchange account for job purposes. However, all other email (general and course materials) should be sent to the student’s “cloud” account
