Creating an UEA for Other Email Accounts (Current UK Member)
If you currently use another email account (such as UK departmental email, or Internet email such as Yahoo) as your primary email account, follow the instructions below to create an University Email Address (UEA) for that account. A valid UK account is required to create your UEA. By activating your UEA, you are NOT forced to use a UKIT provided email account as you can still enable mail forwarding.
Students who do not know their user ID and password should stop by the IT Customer Service Center at 111 McVey Hall, Monday through Friday from 7AM to 6PM. Faculty and staff who do not already know their user ID and password should contact their department to obtain that information.
- Go to the UK Account Manager (https://ukam.uky.edu/manager/). Using your user ID and password, login to the UK Account Manager.
- The UK Account Manager menu will appear. It is highly recommended to change your password while you modify your UK account settings. Click on the Change Password option to do so.
- You will be prompted to change your password. Type in your old password in the Old Password field. Then create a new password, and type that into the New Password and Verify New Password fields. All three fields should be filled.
Your new password should meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least eight (8) characters long.
- Must use at least one character from the following categories:
- Alphabetic characters ("A" through "Z" and "a" through "z")
- Numbers ("0" through "9")
- Special Non-Alphanumeric Characters ("!", "@", "#", "$")
- Cannot be a word listed in a dictionary.
- Cannot be the same as your User ID, or the reverse of your User ID.
- Cannot be the same as your University Email Address, or the reverse of your University Email Address.
- Cannot be the same as your current password.
Click on the Submit Change button to proceed.
- You will return to the UK Account Manager menu. It is highly recommended to enable the password self-reset feature for your UK account, which will allow you to create a new password when you have forgotten your old password. Click on the Setup/Change Self-Service Password Reset option in the menu.
- Carefully read and follow the instructions on resulting the password self-reset page. For the password field, enter your new password you created in step 3. Enter your two password self-reset questions and answers into the fields. Type in your questions and answers carefully to prevent any spelling or grammatical mistakes. Click on the Submit button when you are finished.
For more information regarding the password self-reset feature, please see the About Password Self-Reset document (http://www.uky.edu/IT/CustomerService/Accounts/pwd-selfreset.html).
- You will return to the UK Account Manager menu. Click on the Change University Email Address option to create your UEA.
- The Change Your University Email Address screen will appear. Your UEA will initially appear the same as your current address (userID@uky.edu). You may change this recommended UEA to an identifier you prefer. Your UEA should meet the following criteria:
- Must be your name or a derivative of your name.
- Must be at least three (3) characters long.
- Must consist of only alphanumeric characters, periods (.) and dashes (-).
- Cannot have two consecutive non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. "joe..smith").
- Cannot start and/or end with non-alphanumeric characters (e.g. "-joe.smith.").
Enter your desired UEA address name into the field and click on the Submit Change button.
- You will return to the UK Account Manager menu. You will now need to specify the email address that will receive forwarded mail from your UEA. To do so, click on the Change Email Forwarding Address option.
- The Change Your Forwarding Address screen will appear. Since you will be using another email account as your primary email, email sent to your UEA will need to be forwarded to that account. Ensure that the Enable Forwarding box is checked. In the Forward Mail To: field, enter the full email address that will receive the emails sent to your UEA. Click on the Submit Change button to save your settings.
- You will return to the UK Account Manager. Click on the Logout option to finish. Your UEA will be the email address you specified in step 7 (example: joe.smith@uky.edu). You will now receive email sent to your University Email Address at the forwarding address you specified above.
If you currently use an email client (Microsoft Outlook Express, etc.), you can configure it to use your UEA as the "From" address. For instructions to configure your current email client please see the Adding Your UEA to Your Email Client document (http://www.uky.edu/email/UEA/docs/uea_clients.html).
If you cannot remember your password or have other difficulties creating your UEA, please contact the IT Customer Service Center by phone (257-1300) or email (helpdesk@uky.edu). |
