Cultivation and Weed Control Field Day

1-4 p.m. EDT, at the University of Kentucky Horticulture Research Farm, Organic Farming Unit, 4321 Emmert Farm Lane, Lexington KY 40514. Developing an effective weed management system integrated throughout the production process can reduce weed pressures and labor costs. Join the Organic Association of Kentucky for this field day overview of the mechanical and cultural controls used on the 30-acre UK Organic Farming Unit, hosted by UK’s Mark Williams and Kristi Durbin. Through discussion, handouts and demonstration, participants will see the entire weed control system while gaining a deeper understanding of how to combine strategies to effectively control weeds, including:

  • ​Crop rotation
  • Cover cropping and mulching
  • Bed preparation, including irrigation considerations
  • Stale seedbed cultivation
  • Scale-appropriate cultivating tools
  • Between-row cultivation
  • In-row cultivation
