Retirees Under 65: Health Plans & Rates

What You Need to Know: 

Different options are available for retirees under age 65 and those age 65 and over. Retirees under the age of 65 are eligible for the same health plans that are available to active employees. Ages 65 and over are eligible for UK Medicare Carveout Classic which offers complete freedom to receive services from any provider who accepts Medicare.

Eligibility

  • you are a retiree of any age returning to work for the University of Kentucky on a temporary or part-time basis for at least eight hours per week minimum, on average (.2 FTE).

*Note: If you meet certain retirement eligibility criteria and were hired on or after January 1, 2006, you are eligible to participate in a University retiree health care plan on an “access only” basis: Upon retirement, you may participate in a University retiree health care plan by paying the full cost of the group rate health premium for retirees.

Eligible to Retire as of July 1, 2007 (or already retired)

You meet certain retirement eligibility criteria and are eligible to retire as of July 1, 2007, you are eligible to remain on a health plan with the University's single plan contribution continuing.

Employees retired or eligible to retire as of July 1, 2007 will receive a credit of $624 towards the health plans for 2012-2013.

UK Retiree Actively Working at UK

You are a retiree of any age returning to work for the University of Kentucky on a temporary or part-time basis for at least eight hours per week minimum, on average (.2 FTE). You and/or covered 
spouse may be enrolled in any of UK’s sponsored retiree health plans except the Medicare Carveout Classic plan. Working retirees at .19 FTE or less are not eligible for the working retiree health plans.

*Note: 20% employment (.2 FTE) is generally defined as working 8 hours weekly or 7.5 hours weekly depending on whether the planned working time is based on a 40 or 37.5 hour week.

Eligible to Retire After July 1, 2007

You meet certain retirement eligibility criteria and are eligible to retire after July 1, 2007, you are eligible to remain on a health plan with the monthly Retiree Only premium being determined by age and years of service.
