Lazy Hazy Days of Summer? Or Making Hay While the Sun Shines?

What You Need to Know:

How’s your summer going? Many people look forward to summer as a ‘slower’ pace to relax, renew and regroup. Others look at summer as a time to catch up on home and family projects that fall by the wayside during the other three seasons. My experience suggests that for many UK employees, ‘CAREER’ is the last thing on their minds.

ARE YOU ENJOYING THE LAZY, HAZY  DAYS OF SUMMER or MAKING HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINES?

Diane Kohler, Manager, UK Staff Employees Career Development Program

How’s your summer going? Many people look forward to summer as a ‘slower’ pace to relax, renew and regroup. Others look at summer as a time to catch up on home and family projects that fall by the wayside during the other three seasons. My experience suggests that for many UK employees, ‘CAREER’ is the last thing on their minds.

As your career coach, I’d like to invite you to rethink your summer philosophy. It’s a myth and fallacy that ‘no one hires in the summer.’ When it comes to thinking about all things career, I agree with Kevin Kermes, former employment recruiter and founder of the website Career Attraction (http://www.careerattraction.com/) who feels strongly that you do yourself a disservice to ‘take it easy at work,’  and ‘back off your job search’ in the summer. As a headhunter, Kermes notes that his most productive months were July, August and December. Further he states,  “if everyone else is backing off, it’s time for you to double down. It’s MUCH easier to stand out at work or in the job market when everyone else is taking it ‘easy’ over the summer. Let them rest while you crush it.”
