In 2010, the University of Kentucky was one of five schools selected to participate in the Iraq University Linkages Program through a partnership between the State Department and FHI 360, a nonprofit organization that focuses on health and education, as well as social and economic development in developing countries.
Each of the selected U.S. schools was paired with an Iraqi institution to focus on defined fields of study. UK has partnered with the University of Kufa, located in Najaf province in southern Iraq, which is the top university in Iraq and among the 100 best Arab institutions. (Webometrics Ranking of World's Universities, 2011) The partnership is focusing on civil engineering, business administration and English as a Second Language.
The focus of the three-year grant will be on curriculum development, accomplished both through distance technologies and site visits by Iraqi delegations.
