Mekelle University (MU) enrolls approximately 30,000 students in seven colleges (Business and Economics, Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources, Law and Governance, Social Sciences and Languages, Veterinary Medicine, Natural and Computational Sciences, and Health Sciences) and eight institutes (education, archaeology, technology, water and environment, climate, gender, environment and development, and Geo-Information and Earth Observation). The College of Health Sciences includes a school of medicine.
UK’s relationship with MU was facilitated by Dr. Enawgaw Mehari, an Ethiopian physician who studied at UK and now lives in Morehead, KY. Mehari chairs an NGO that provides medical and humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia and, in 2011, was approached by Mekelle about a possible partnership with UK. In 2012, UK hosted a visit by Dr. Zerihun Abebe, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, and Dr. Ephrem Tekle Lemenago, head of quality assurance for the College of Health Sciences. During the visit UK and MU signed a memorandum of understanding.
Discussions with MU have centered on possible collaborations between UK’s anthropology department and MU’s Institute of Paleo-Environment and Heritage Conservation, and between UK’s Colleges of Public Health, Medicine, and Fine Arts and their counterparts at MU. UK and MU have reached agreement on establishing a clinical rotation for UK medical students at MU.
