The Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) has three campuses and offers sixty-seven undergraduate and thirty-eight graduate programs. Its programs include phytopathology, entomology, plant physiology animal science, agricultural microbiology, genetics, soils and plant nutrition, food science and technology, and, beginning in 2010, medicine and nursing. It enrolls approximately 20,000 students.
UK signed its first agreement (a memorandum of understanding) with UFV in 2001 and its first student exchange agreement in 2004. Both the umbrella agreement and exchange agreement have been regularly renewed, most recently in 2013. The exchanges have been supported by funding from the US Department of Education’s FIPSE/CAPES program and more than forty students have been exchanged. The partnership with UFV has resulted in research collaborations in animal housing and machinery systems.
A major goal of the partnership has been to develop a dual degree program for graduate education. Negotiations to establish dual PhD degree programs in plant pathology and in biosystems and agricultural engineering are under way.
