Alternative Service Breaks

Through the Center for Community Outreach, the national service organization Break Away, and in collaboration with UK Education Abroad, the University of Kentucky Alternative Service Breaks program connects students with service projects in communities beyond the borders of Lexington and Kentucky. Alternative Service Breaks (ASB) aim to provide service experiences that are educational and cultural, and that promote active citizenship among UK students, faculty and staff.

Service-learning is defined as an integrative experience through which learners engage in thoughtfully organized service in response to a community identified need.  Experiences are designed to be a mutually-beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources accomplished by service and reflection.  Learning outcomes promote academic and civic engagement and are focused on holistic learner development and community well-being.  Service-learning can be credit bearing or non-credit bearing.

Alternative Service Breaks participants should choose the application that applies to them, depending on whether or not they are earning academic credit in conjunction with their program abroad. Please note: applications must first be submitted and accepted by ASB before applying to the Education Abroad office.
