Fulbright Drop-in Sessions

 

The University of Kentucky Office of External Scholarships will host six Fulbright Program drop-in sessions throughout the summer.  These sessions are intended for rising seniors who are interested in teaching English, conducting research or attending graduate school abroad. 

Each of the following sessions will be in room 219 of Funkhouser - 

    Tuesday, July 8     9:30 am - 11:30am
    Wednesday, July 9  11:30 am - 1:30 pm   
    Thursday, July 10    1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Lecture to Discuss UK’s Work Fighting HIV and AIDS in Zambia

Faculty and staff in UK’s School of Journalism and Telecommunications are fighting HIV and AIDS in Zambia.

Beth Barnes, director of the School of Journalism and Telecommunications, will discuss the school’s partnership with a media training organization in Zambia to raise the standard of reporting and use journalistic techniques to provide information on HIV and AIDS. The event will take place:

International Arts Festival

Join the International Student Council. for the International Arts Festival Friday April 11, 2014 at 6:00-8:00 p.m. The festival will take place in the Engineering Courtyard. There will be free international food, international art and performances from cultures all over the world. 

 

 

Taste of Africa

Join the African Student Association and Medical Bridges for Taste of Africa in the Student Center Theater on Saturday April 12, 2014 at 5 p.m. Taste of Africa will feature fashion, food, music, dance and poetry from different African nations. 

The tickets are $5. The proceeds will go towards Medical Bridge, a charity which takes surplus medical supplies to Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, and other countries in need. 

 

 

The Annual Lexington Peace Fair Returns for its 8th year

Lexington's annual Peace Fair will return in it's 8th year, bringing together people and organizations to benefit the community. The fair will host live music, local food, games, workshops, art projects, and many other engaging activities! The Lexington Peace Fair promotes social and economic justice, building ecological resilience, preserving nature, teaching peace, and creating a more diverse and beautiful community.  

Summer, Fall & Academic Year Pre-Departure Orientations

 

As a part of the UK Education Abroad ISP 599 course requirement, Pre-Departure Sessions are an opportunity for students to create goals for their program, manage expectations, and  candidly discuss regional topics including current events, homestay considerations, diversity issues, practical advice, and more. 

World Refugee Day: Lexington's Bridge to the World

Lexington has an ever-growing population of refugees. Did you know we have the third largest population of resettled Congolese immigrants in the country (just behind Phoenix and Houston)? To learn more about the advantages and challenges that come with welcoming refugees into our community, join us on Friday, June 20th from 9:00am-2pm for the World Refugee Day Summit: Lexington’s Bridge to the World.

Scholars and UK Faculty to Honor Nelson Mandela’s Legacy

Nelson Mandela’s name is now synonymous with South Africa’s bold attempt at national reconciliation. In light of his recent passing, a panel will explore his legacy on Thursday, April 17, at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Center, rm. 230. A reception will follow the panel discussion.

The event, titled “No Greater Cause; Reconciliation and the Life and Legacy of Nelson Mandela,” will trace the global discourse of truth and reconciliation through a broader consideration of Mandela’s remarkable life.

Cultural Coffee Hour

Have a cup of coffee and become aware of the diverse multicultural perspectives at UK. Meet international students and learn how to get involved, where to eat and how to adjust to life at UK. Snacks and beverages are provided. You are welcome to bring an item to share and talk about your culture. This event is Co-sponsored by the University of Kentucky International Center, and the Counseling & VIP Center.
