DATES: 4 Week Option: June 7 - July 5 • Six Week Option (with Spanish Course): MAY 25 - JULY 5
Designed for students in the College of Health Sciences and other health-related majors at the University of Kentucky, students in this program will complete a service-learning experience in Lima, Peru. In collaboration with our partner, ISA-ELAP, service-learning placements will be arranged in health-related environments, such as public and private medical clinics, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, public and special schools, non-profits, community organizations, health-related businesses, etc.
Possible activities may include (but are not guaranteed) assisting with public health campaigns, shadowing healthcare workers, interacting with patients/clients and their families during medical visits, assisting adults and children with health-related physical and cognitive limitations, observing and assisting healthcare professionals with assessment and intervention programs, and taking blood pressure and height/weight measurements. The placements will not involve direct patient-care roles. The placement for each student will be customized to the extent possible based on background, language ability and experience, in positions relevant to the student’s professional and academic goals. Program open to students at all levels of Spanish proficiency. Placement will depend on Spanish proficiency.
Homestay living accommodations, including three meals per day, and excursions to Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu are included in the program price.
UK Sponsored programs are conducted by University of Kentucky faculty. UK credits and grades will be awarded by the program director for the successful and timely completion of all required program activities and assignments, including any required on-campus meetings. Students will earn:
HHS 470 (3 hours) (Graduate & Undergraduate)
SPA XXX (2 hours)
ISP 599 (1 hour)
