2017 Scholarship Opportunities

2017-2018 Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) Program

UK Office of China Initiatives (OCI), in partnership with the Confucius Institute (UKCI), is pleased to announce the 2017-18 Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) Program from the China Scholarship Council (CSC). This opportunity was established to promote mutual understanding, cooperation and exchanges in various fields between China and other countries. The CGS supports students, teachers, and scholars who wish to study and conduct research at Chinese universities (CGS website:
Recipients may apply for admission to any of 279 participating universities in China in a wide range of fields. Some of the fields include: Science, Engineering, Management, History, Fine Arts and Chinese Language Study.  Academic programs in Chinese and in English are available.  Please click here to learn more about the participating universities.
The deadline for the online and hardcopy CGS applications is Friday, March 17, 2017. The hardcopy of the online application, along with other required documents (see below), must be submitted to the coordinator of the OCI, Kathryn Todd, in Bradley Hall, Office 210, by March 17.
Applicants are encouraged to contact Kathryn,, to schedule a meeting to discuss specific academic interests and needs.  Details regarding scholarship coverage and the application process are provided below.     
The Full Scholarship Covers:

  1. Tuition waiver for host Chinese university
  2. Accommodation: free university dormitory or accommodation subsidy
  3. Stipend:

    1. General scholar students (UK undergraduate students studying abroad in China):
           CNY 3,000 per month (≈$438) 
    2. Senior scholar students (UK graduate students studying abroad in China):
           CNY 3,500 per month (≈$510)
    3. For students seeking a degree in China:
           - Undergraduate students: CNY 2,500 per month (≈$365)
           - Master’s students: CNY 3,000 per month (≈$438)
           - Doctoral students: CNY 3,500 per month (≈$510)
    4. Comprehensive medical insurance

To be eligible for the CGS, an applicant must:

  • be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China and be in good health;
  • be a high school graduate under the age of 25 when applying for undergraduate programs;
  • be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for master’s programs;
  • be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for doctoral programs;
  • be under the age of 45 and have completed at least two years of undergraduate study when applying for general scholar programs;
  • be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above) under the age of 50 when applying for senior scholar programs.

*Applicants planning to stay in China for more than six months must complete the physical examination form. The physical examinations must cover all the items listed in the form.Incomplete forms or forms without the signature of the attending physician, or the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are considered as invalid. Please carefully plan your physical examination schedule as the result is valid for only six months. 

Instructions for Completing the Online and Hardcopy Application Processes:
Instructions for the CGS Information System (Online Application)

  1. Visit and click Application Online for International Students. If the website appears in Chinese, click English ​at the top of the screen.
  2. Click Create an account for registration and creation of new username.
  3. For Program Category, select Type A; for Agency Number, input 8401.
  4. Fill in the Online Application Form and Upload Supporting Documents (the supporting documents are the same as the paper documents to be printed [two copies]).
  5. Applicants are required to select a discipline before choosing their majors.
  6. Click Submit to submit your application.
  7. You can make changes to your application by clicking Withdraw and Edit the Application on the top of the page. But make sure to submit it again by clicking Submit after finishing all the changes. Otherwise, the retrieved application will become invalid and your new application will not be received either.
  8. Download the completed Application Form by clicking Print the Application Form and print two hard copies.
  9. Prepare other supporting documents as required and bring the full package of application documents (two copies) to Kathryn Todd, Bradley Hall, Office 210.

Instructions for the Hardcopy Application Process. Only complete applications will be  considered. Application Deadline: Wednesday, March 17, 2017

  1. Application form for the Chinese Government Scholarship (in Chinese or English)
  2. Notarized highest diploma: photocopy
  3. Academic transcripts: unofficial transcripts from myUK are satisfactory
  4. A study plan or research proposal: at least 500 words in Chinese or English
  5. Two recommendation letters: at least by Assistant Professor level or above
  6. Applicants for music & fine art studies are requested to submit a CD of their works
  7. Applicants under the age of 18 should submit the valid documents of their legal guardians in China
  8. Applicants planning to stay in China for more than six months must submit a photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed
  9. Applicants with Admission Letter from Designated universities should enclose the letter in the application package
  10.  Applicants with valid HSK Certificate should enclose it in the application package

NOTE: The above documents should be bound on top left corner in the order listed above (in duplicate). No application documents will be returned.
For those applicants who need to take the HSK, please click here to check for available HSK test and registration dates.

UKCI will assist in the visa application for scholarship recipients. A visa application fee of $333.50 is to be covered by recipients. A valid passport is also needed for this trip. The passport must be valid for at least six months after the trip. Recipients are encouraged to purchase their own international travel insurance. The OCI and UKCI will host two mandatory orientations for recipients to prepare them for their time in China.
