Monica Blackmun Visonà

Monica Blackmun Visonà, an Africanist and an Associate Professor of Art History in the School of Art and Visual Studies, supervises the Certificate in Global Studies.  Academic advisors check students’ records to see whether their courses and study abroad qualify students for the CGS, but Dr. Visonà reviews their two reflective essays and helps them troubleshoot the process.  Dr. Visonà is committed to working with individual students who wish to draw upon their international background in their future study, and in their careers.

Dr. Visonà spent a semester in Germany as an undergraduate, and worked that summer in a French resort in Morocco.   Her doctoral dissertation was based upon fieldwork in the Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire), and she has visited (or lived in) a dozen other African countries. Since arriving at the University of Kentucky, she has worked on research projects in Ghana and Egypt, and has taught a study abroad course on African art in Paris. She speaks fluent Italian and French, rather basic German, and a smattering of phrases in Chin’chewa, Swahili, Twi-Fanti, Akye, and Arabic.
