From Ethiopia to Kentucky: College of Medicine Welcomes Getachew Hailu

From the mountains and waterfalls of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, to the rolling hills and equine landscapes of Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. Getachew Hailu endured an exhausting 17-hour trip this summer to begin his sabbatical year at the University of Kentucky.

During this year, Hailu said he hopes to observe other doctors and learn more about cancer, his main field of interest, while working at UK’s College of Medicine.

Dr. Alan J. DeYoung to Embark on a Journey to Turkmenistan as a Senior Fulbright Scholar

Alan J. DeYoung, Ph.D., first came to UK from Florida State University in 1977, where he obtained a doctorate in anthropological and sociological studies in education from Stanford University. His doctoral minor was in sociology; and he also attained a master of arts in child development. Now, DeYoung can add another “Senior Fulbright Scholar” to his many awards. He was selected by the U.S. Department of State and the International University for the Humanities & Development (IUHD) in Turkmenistan to be a part of this new experience.

Away From Home, Nigerian Student Finds Fulfillment In Her Service in Lexington

A University of Kentucky senior from Nigeria, Aisha Nwandu has found a lot of joy and fulfillment in her involvement with numerous service groups on campus and around Lexington. Passionate about social justice issues, Aisha has spent her time at the University of Kentucky balancing various service positions with Fusion, Alpha phi Omega and Campus Kitchen, as well as a semester-long internship with the Kentucky Refugee Ministries, with the rigorous course loads and demands of any UK student.

Fall Fair Sept. 8 brings education abroad opportunities to students

Education Abroad (EA) will hold its annual Fall Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8 in the Buell Armory.

Memorial Service Planned for UK International Student Shabika Arvijanti


A memorial service commemorating the life of former University of Kentucky student from Indonesia, Shabika Arvijanti, will take place 5 – 7 p.m. Sunday, August 28, in the Memorial Hall Amphitheater. The memorial is open to the public and those attending should wear light-colored clothing, honoring the traditions of her culture.
 

Honduras Native Kept Busy This Summer Combining Her Skills

Tiffany Molina, an international student from Honduras studying equine science and business management at the University of Kentucky, split her summer time between Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, Commerce Lexington and the UK International Center.

Now in her senior year, Molina has been a highly involved student since her freshman year. She is involved in the Gatton Women Business Leaders and the American Marketing Association, is the former president of the International Student Council, and is a sitter for Wildcat Service Dogs.
