The University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra returned to Lexington this week after a 14-day concert tour in China, where its performances received warm receptions.

Skip Gray, director of the UK school of music, called the trip "a huge success."

"The students played beautifully. They performed in great performance halls. Wherever we went we were well received. I can't imagine it being much better," Gray said.

The University of Kentucky College of Education and UK Confucius Institute recently helped host visiting educators from China to learn more about private and innovative public schools in the U.S. Specifically, they wanted to know how the schools are organized, governed and led as well as gain an understanding of how curricula are developed, how expectations for students are set, and the key role parents play in the education of their children.

Earlier this semester a University of Kentucky delegation led by Interim Provost Tim Tracy visited Jilin University – one of the most prestigious “Top Ten” universities in China – with an aim to expand UK’s name recognition in China, and create new collaborative opportunities. This trip builds upon President Capilouto’s trip to Jilin University last May.

Like the University of Kentucky, Jilin University is a large comprehensive institution that includes several health care colleges, creating numerous opportunities between the two institutions.

The University of Kentucky Confucius Institute proudly awarded scholarships to14 students to support their participation in the UK sponsored summer education abroad program, Conversational Chinese at Shanghai University.

This 4-week Summer I course in China will take place May 12 to June 7. The students will learn Chinese in an immersion environment while living in the international student resident hall at Shanghai University’s Zhabei campus, located near the heart of the city.

2013 Summer China Trip for High school students

On Wednesday, Feb. 20^th, the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky had the distinct pleasure of welcoming the performers and crew of the Internationally renound operatic initiative “I SING Beijing” to Lexington, Kentucky. This wonderful performance drew a vast and varied crowd that included both Chinese and American, educators and performers, community members and more.

UK Confucius Institute 2013 Spring Chinese Language and Culture Camp

This is a one-week Chinese language and culture camp taking place during the spring break. Simple Chinese language and a variety of cultural activities will be the focus of this camp. The curriculumis designed for students from grades 3 - 6.
