UK Confucius Institute Director Wins KWLA Award

This weekend, Huajing Maske, executive director of the Office of China Initiatives and director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kentucky, will receive the Amici Linguarum (Friend of Languages) Award given by the Kentucky World Language Association (KWLA).

Xu Qingping was a professor of Art History and a memeber of the academic committee of Central Academy of Fine Arts. He is Deputy Curator of Xu Beihong Museum, Vice Chairman of Chinese Painters ad Calligraphers Association and Dean of Xu Beihong Arts Research Academy, Renmin University of China.

UKCI Moon Festival Artwork and Essay Competition held successfully

     In August and September of 2014, UKCI held our 4th K-12 Chinese Moon Festival Artwork and Essay Competition. We held the award ceremony as part of the Chinese Moon Festival evening party organized by the Chinese Association on September 6th. We received 242 artwork submissions and 16 essays from 4 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 5 high schools and 2 Chinese schools. Submissions were divided into three groups: elementary school, middle school and high school.

Confucius Institute Day

Confucius Institute Day will take place on Saturday, September 27th from 10 to 2 at Triangle Park. There will be Chinese cultural activities for the community: create opera masks, try your hand at Chinese calligraphy, listen to traditional Chinese music, participate in a traditional tea ceremony, eat delicious Chinese food, play Chinese hackey sack, win tshirts and much more!

UK Volleyball Goes to China

The Kentucky volleyball team and staff returned from a two-week trip to China Wednesday night, where they combined competition and culture into a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Wildcats visited five cities, played seven matches against some of the elite Chinese professional teams and went on an educational journey along the way. The team visited historical sites and landmarks and took a class that began a week before they left and continued in China.

Journalism's Buck Ryan Publishes in Jilin Research Journal on Chinese Culture

University of Kentucky Associate Professor Buck Ryan, who was honored a second time for his teaching at Shanghai University, is publishing an article on journalism education in a prestigious research journal on Chinese culture published by Jilin University.

Ryan, the eighth director in the 100-year history of the School of Journalism and Telecommunications, was recognized at Shanghai University in June for the second consecutive year for his course, "Storytelling: Exploring China's Art and Culture." 

Confucius Institute High School Summer Trip to China

Central Kentucky high school students traveled to China this summer to experience classes and culture on the annual Confucius Institute High School Summer Trip to China.

Shanghai University Students Visit UK's College of Fine Arts

Recently the college of Fine Arts welcomed a group of students and faculty from Shanghai University interested in learning about art and design through the Confucius Institute. This annual exchange program has been in place since 2011 and presents SHU students and faculty with a valuable opportunity to experience both UK and American culture.
