From São Paulo to Lexington, Fulbright Student Discovers the Joys of the Bluegrass

Fulbright student, Sofia Ferraz, has spent the last few months dedicated to her postgraduate research in marketing, as well as exploring all that the University of Kentucky and Lexington have to offer. Over the months that she has spent at UK, Ferraz has been involved with multiple groups and societies both on campus and around Lexington.

Turkmenistan Opens its Doors to UK Fulbrighter, Alan DeYoung

Turkmenistan, which used to be part of the Soviet Union, has been mostly closed to visitors for the past thirty years. This year, University of Kentucky’s emeritus professor of sociology and educational policy studies was given the opportunity to work there as a Fulbright Scholar. Alan DeYoung, the first Fulbrighter to enter the country in almost a decade, brought with him his eagerness to learn more about human development strategies in Turkmenistan and to help create a new sociology program.

Get to Know One of UK’s Most Popular Exchange Programs at Maynooth University

Students can learn more about one of University of Kentucky’s most popular exchange programs at Maynooth University, just 15 miles west of Dublin, Ireland, at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in 207 Bradley Hall.

“No student has ever come back from Maynooth with a bad experience, they love it,” said Laurence Tuccori, exchanges coordinator.

Students Find Home Away from Home at Maynooth University, Ireland

University of Kentucky students, Alli Robic and Claire Johnson, began their education abroad experience abroad as strangers, but after meeting each other in the Dublin airport, they have been inseparable. Both students found a home at UK’s exchange partner Maynooth University and shared the many experiences of being in a new country together, including missing Ireland as they returned to the U.S.

Five UK Students Awarded Education Abroad’s Diversity Scholarship

Five students were selected to receive the Education Abroad Diversity Scholarship for the 2015-2016 year. The scholarship is awarded to students who contribute to UK’s diverse community.

Diversity can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Scholarship recipient, Rodney Furman, said, “This world is unbelievably big, and the amount of languages spoken, the customs and beliefs practiced, the beautiful sights to see, illustrate how endless our opportunities are.”

International Service Learning

What is service-learning?

Service-learning is defined as an integrative experience through which learners engage in thoughtfully organized service in response to a community identified need.  Experiences are designed to be a mutually-beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources accomplished by service and reflection.  Learning outcomes promote academic and civic engagement and are focused on holistic learner development and community well-being.  Service-learning can be credit bearing or non-credit bearing.
