UK Master’s Student Researches HIV/AIDS in the Dominican Republic

After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from The Ohio State University, Angel Algarin had plans to become a veterinarian. He would soon find out that he had to steer himself in another direction. Algarin wanted to study HIV/AIDS, and he knew that he had to find a way to follow this passion. Soon after, he applied for the master’s degree program in public health at the University of Kentucky.

UK Senior Presents at National Women’s Studies Association Conference

A Nigerian native, Tiwaladeoluwa Adekunle has found a passion for research in the Big Blue Nation. University of Kentucky English and international studies double-major, Adekunle was motivated by her professor and mentor, Charlie Zang MD, to apply to be a presenter in the National Women’s Studies Association Conference held in Montreal, Quebec, this year. The senior received the good news of her acceptance at the beginning of summer break, which gave her time to prepare for her talk on “Afropolitanism: The Pre and Post Dynamics of Decolonization.”

Kavoori Keynotes for International Education Week

The UK International Center will welcome media and entertainment professor Anandam (Andy) Kavoori as its keynote speaker for International Education Week slated Nov. 14-18. Kavoori’s talk, “The Word and The World: Lessons from South Asia and Beyond,” will be held 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the William T. Young Library Auditorium.

UK Celebrates International Education Week

Every year, the week before Thanksgiving is transformed from just another week in the year to one that celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange, known across universities in the United States as “International Education Week.” UK will celebrate cultural diversity, globalization and international education during International Education Week (IEW), Nov. 14-18.

Roberts Named Associate Provost for Internationalization

The University of Kentucky International Center welcomes Sue Roberts, professor of geography, as its new Associate Provost for Internationalization.

Sue Roberts has been a faculty member in geography at the University of Kentucky since 1991. In her more than 25 years at UK, she has served in a number of roles including director of the International Studies program and associate dean for internationalization in the College of Arts & Sciences.

From Ethiopia to Kentucky: College of Medicine Welcomes Getachew Hailu

From the mountains and waterfalls of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, to the rolling hills and equine landscapes of Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. Getachew Hailu endured an exhausting 17-hour trip this summer to begin his sabbatical year at the University of Kentucky.

During this year, Hailu said he hopes to observe other doctors and learn more about cancer, his main field of interest, while working at UK’s College of Medicine.

Dr. Alan J. DeYoung to Embark on a Journey to Turkmenistan as a Senior Fulbright Scholar

Alan J. DeYoung, Ph.D., first came to UK from Florida State University in 1977, where he obtained a doctorate in anthropological and sociological studies in education from Stanford University. His doctoral minor was in sociology; and he also attained a master of arts in child development. Now, DeYoung can add another “Senior Fulbright Scholar” to his many awards. He was selected by the U.S. Department of State and the International University for the Humanities & Development (IUHD) in Turkmenistan to be a part of this new experience.

UK Professor Visits Cuba, Learns about Use of Organopónicos for Sustainable Agriculture


Brent Rowell, professor in the Department of Horticulture at the University of Kentucky, traveled to Cuba in May 2015 with a group of professors and students from McGill University, located in Montreal, Canada.

ACE Peer Review Team “Admires” UK’s Progress in Comprehensive Internationalization

A team of American Council on Education (ACE) representatives visited the University of Kentucky to conduct a peer review in early September, as part of UK’s participation in the ACE Internationalization Lab 2.0.
