UK Students Receive Scholarships to Study Languages Abroad

An undergraduate in the University of Kentucky's College of Communication and Information and a doctoral candidate in the College of Arts and Sciences have received Critical Language Scholarships to study languages abroad. Meredith King, a senior majoring in communication, will study Chinese in China, and Lydia Shanklin Roll, a doctoral candidate in anthropology, will study Turkish in Turkey.

This is a one-week Chinese language and culture camp taking place during the spring break. Simple Chinese language and a variety of cultural activities will be the focus of this camp. The curriculum is designed for students from grades 3 - 6.

Dates: April 1-5, 2013
Application deadline: March 22, 2013
Campers’ age group: Grades 3 - 6
Tuition: $120 per student

The College of Arts and Sciences produces podcasts that demonstrate work being done by the faculty and students in the college. Each week, UKNow will highlight a podcast. This week focuses on an A&S education abroad course.

 

Education Abroad Prepares Students for International Experiences

Culture shock is the disorientation one feels when immersed in an entirely different cultural setting, such as an education abroad setting. Though it often leads to discomfort, it is actually seen as  a vital component of international experience.

“Culture shock isn’t a bad thing at all,” Anthony Ogden, director of Education Abroad at UK said.

The UK Confucius Institute is pleased to announce the UK Chinese Language Program Summer Language in China Scholarship. The scholarship, made possible by the 2012 Confucius Institute of the Year award, will strengthen UKCI’s support of the Chinese language program at UK.

UK Education Abroad Peer Ambassadors Help Students "see blue." Abroad

After returning from an education abroad program, many students want to prolong their international experiences and stay connected to the country they temporarily called home.  Many also want to help their peers attain similar education abroad experiences. UK students are able to do this through the Education Abroad Peer Ambassador (EAPA) Program.

2013 Summer China Educator's Trip


The UK Confucius Institute is pleased to announce the 2013 Summer China Trip  — a 12 day education trip hosted by the UK Confucius Institute and designed to help education decision-makers start and expand their Chinese language and culture programs.

Since this trip is sponsored by the UK Confucius Institute, all expenses within China are paid by the UKCI, and participants will bear the responsibility for international round trip airfare and Visa application fee.
