UK's Appalachian Ties, Land Grant Mission Transforms Indonesian Community

Indonesia looks nothing like Kentucky.

While the Commonwealth yields tobacco, corn and soybeans, the Southeast Asian islands grow rice, pineapples and coffee. But the obstacles the two regions face are eminently similar: namely, economic and agricultural underdevelopment. Sixty percent of the poorest Indonesians live on small farms. Indonesian farmers use cows to plow their rice paddies. They plant their pineapples and harvest coffee beans by hand.

UK Students Gain First Hand Agricultural Experience in Indonesia

A group of University of Kentucky College of Agriculture students and one student from the University of Missouri Columbia participated in a five week field course that gave them first hand experiences in agriculture, ecology, and sustainable development in Indonesia, led by University of Kentucky professor Krista Jacobson. While in Indonesia, the students learned about key issues effecting Indonesian agriculture, tourism and agricultural policies.

UK Grad Returns from Middle East, Prepares for Career in Peacemaking

Christine Kindler graduated from the University of Kentucky in May 2013, and like her fellow alumni she is preparing to start a new career. However, unlike most graduates, she's using her experiences in the Middle East — in Israel and Palestine — to determine what the future has in store for her.

Kindler grew up with a passion for learning. As a home-schooled student from Lexington, her parents always encouraged her to seek out new opportunities and maintain an open mind. It was that mindset that led Kindler to pursue an education abroad opportunity during her junior year.

Former EA Ambassadors Join the Peace Corps

Two University of Kentucky graduates will join the Peace Corps this year to pursue service opportunities across the world. Gwendolyn Schaefer (pictured right) and Olivia Brown (pictured left) will leave the U.S. for 27 months to volunteer in developing countries as part of the program.

Three UK Students Receive Scholarships to Study Abroad

Thee University of Kentucky students have been awarded the fall 2013 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship by the Institute of International Education to support their study abroad experiences.

The Gilman Scholarship is a congressionally funded scholarship provided by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education.

UK Students Named Fulbright Recipients

Four students from the University of Kentucky have been selected as recipients of Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarships. The UK recipients are among 1,900 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2013-2014 academic year through the prestigious program. In addition, one of UK's four winners, medical student Juliana Odetunde, received one of only five prestigious Fulbright-Fogarty awards, which promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings.

UK Music Talents in Spotlight in China, Italy

The sounds of the University of Kentucky School of Music are being featured on international stages this month in China and Italy as the UK Symphony Orchestra and UK Chorale tour miles away from their home stage.
