Unknown Server Error

Problem

When accessing a workbook that has been published to Tableau Server, you may receive the following error: 

 

Cause

If you are using SAP HANA as one of your data sources, this problem is likely cased by the "incorrect" authentication method being selected in the connection properties.

 

Solution

  1. In Tableau Desktop, open the workbook that is displaying the error.
  2. Click the Data Source tab.
  3. In the menubar, click Data, hover over the SAP HANA server name (i.e., hana.uky.edu) at the bottom of the menu, and click Edit Connection.

On Windows:

  1. Select Use a specific username and password​; enter a single space for the username, and leave the password field blank.
  2. Click Sign In.*
  3. Republish the workbook to Tableau Server.**

On Mac:

  1. Select Kerberos.
  2. Click Sign In.*
  3. Republish the workbook to Tableau Server.**

* If Tableau can't make the connection, verify that your credentials are correct. If you sill can't connect, your computer is having trouble locating the server. Please contact the Information Technology Services (ITS) service desk at (859) 218-4357 for further assistance.
