College/Unit: Center for Applied Energy Research

What services do you and your teammates provide to campus?

We offer programming and networking for the Center for Applied Energy Research. The center was originally tasked with coal research, but over the years, it has of course broadened. We research everything from charge cycles on batteries to flue gas remediation. We work on fisher trope research as well.

As the IT Manager, I do programming for various HR workflows and work on websites that require database operations, and I offer support for Windows applications.

Tell us about your collaboration with ITS and the ITS services that your department utilizes:

We have a suite of workflows that we're building with Microsoft Azure. ITS provides the infrastructure for mobile apps and web apps so that we can use the Microsoft Azure platform. I like Microsoft Azure because it integrates so well with Visual Studio (the development environment for Microsoft). At one time we had our own account with Microsoft, but now we've integrated with UK's account, so ITS helps facilitate the billing for the vendor. This is good for UK because it's more streamlined for all of the departments to have our cloud services under the same umbrella.

Additionally, we're working with the Enterprise Systems team to migrate from our own active directory to UK's active directory. This is an ongoing project.
