Information Technology Services Honors Customers and Employees

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 22, 2017) — University of Kentucky Information Technology Services (ITS) announced the inaugural recipients of the Customer Excellence Award for Leadership in IT Advancement at UK at a ceremony on Friday, May 12. During the same ceremony, 41 ITS employees were honored for a combined 650 years of service to the university.

WCry Ransomware Widespread Outbreak

On Friday, May 12, reports of a widespread outbreak of WCry ransomware surfaced. WCry is also commonly referred to as WannaCry and/or WanaCryptOr. Wcry was discovered in February, but recently updated and began spreading quickly.

What is Ransomware?  Ransomware is a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid.

Google Accounts Exposed to Phishing

Recently, Google customers were targeted by an email phishing campaign.  113 UK Google accounts ( were identified, after investigation, as having been impacted by the attack. All impacted customers have been notified via email.

Cloudflare: Personally Identifiable Information Available Online

Information Technology Services (ITS) has become aware that Cloudflare, a website hosting firm, has announced a technical glitch which allowed web pages to capture and store personal information, allowing anyone to visit these sites’ cache to retrieve the information.  This has since been fixed. However, since this technical issue had been going on for some time personal information provided to those sites may still be accessible.  Please help us by sharing this information with your colleagues.
